The Union Landing Historical Society of Brielle is pleased and proud to present Chief Petty Officer Maffioli at our Historical Society's event on Wednesday November 15th at 7pm.  The event, open to the public and free of charge, will be hosted at Brielle's Curtis House.  The Curtis House is located at 644 Union Lane in Brielle, directly across the street from the Brielle Elementary school.

Please mark your calendars for Wednesday November 15th 2023 at 7pm and plan on meeting CPO Maffioli for a fun, interesting and informational discussion regarding the duties of our local Coast Guard station.

Chief Petty Officer Michael A. Maffioli is a respected local member of the U.S. Coast Guard. As the Assistant Engineering Petty Officer at Manasquan Inlet, Point Pleasant, NJ, he oversees the maintenance and repairs of Coast Guard facilities, small boats, and rescue equipment. He holds multiple qualifications, including Boat Crew Member, Motor Life Boat Engineer, and Boarding Officer. Station Manasquan Inlet provides the Jersey Shore with Search and Rescue and Maritime Law Enforcement services.

Chief Maffioli enlisted in the Coast Guard in December of 2010, and his twelve years of service have taken him to various locations across the country, including New Jersey, Virginia, Massachusetts, Maryland, Florida, and Guam. He has extensive experience in shipboard engineering and small boat operations, and he even commissioned the Coast Guard Cutter Frederick Hatch, a 154-foot Fast Response Cutter, and delivered it from Key West to Guam on a two-month Trans-Pacific Voyage.

Interesting presentation by Dan Lieb, President of the New Jersey Historical Divers Association (NJHDA), entitled “New Jersey Shipwrecks”.

For the past 300 years, the waters off New York and New Jersey have been a hub of maritime activity. Over that same period of time, thousands of vessels have sunk off our shores, with the loss of thousands of lives. Part of the vast "Graveyard of the Atlantic," hundreds of these wreck sites have been identified over the years,
and many more have not. NJDHA President Dan Lieb will offer an overview of the more well-known wrecks visited by divers and fishermen.

About the New Jersey Historical Divers Association, Inc. (NJHDA): NJHDA investigates many of the misnamed and unidentified shipwrecks off our coast. NJHDA identifies shipwrecks by recording the wreck sites, taking video and photographs, measuring the sites, and collecting and treating artifacts. They then create accurate records of their findings and share them with the world.  They have also established the “New Jersey Shipwreck Museum” located in the InfoAge Science and History Museums (2201 Marconi Road, Wall, New Jersey 07719) For more information on NJHDA, please visit: https://njhda.org/
